No disco for these tamancha (pistol) wielding teens as their viral video was forwarded to a police official ultimately leading to their arrest.
19-year-old Sahil and 18-year-old Asif, were arrested after a viral video of them flashing and firing illegal weapons went viral on several WhatsApp groups. Police said that they were both residents of Kakrola and school dropouts.
After clicking photographs and recording videos of themselves brandishing the illegal weapons, they forwarded these to WhatsApp groups of ‘trusted’ friends and asked them not to forward to anyone else. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Anto Alphonse said that the pictures and videos were made moments after Sahil had purchased a semi-automatic pistol from Asif.
One of their friends ignored the requests to forward the pictures and that set off a forward chain. For over a month, the photos and video of the culprits kept circulating among different groups. Unfortunately (for the two teens), one of the receivers of the videos and photos was a police informer. He forwarded them to a police official which alerted the officers of Dwarka North police station.
The officers took a while to establish and confirm the identities of the duo featuring in the photos and videos. But when police caught them, they were allegedly found carrying the same weapons seen in the pictures. DCP (Dwarka) Anto Alphonse said that Sahil wanted to purchase a gun and had approached Asif, who is into selling illegal weapons. He arrived with a regular desi pistol and a semi-automatic country made pistol. Sahil checked both the weapons
and settled for the semiautomatic one.
While Asif has no police record, Sahil was apprehended as a minor in 2017 for allegedly killing an executive of a private firm during a robbery bid in Dwarka.
“Sahil liked to call himself ‘Badshah’, based on the Bollywood film he was inspired by. He wanted the gun to impress his girlfriend and other friends.” said the DCP.
